Keep Well This Winter

Keep Well, Keep Warm and Keep Safe this Winter!!!

As the Winter fast approaches and the blustery gales increase, so to does the cost of keeping ourselves, well, warm and safe. This is a real problem for those who are aged 50+.

In order to keep the residents of Merthyr Tydfil well, warm and safe this winter, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, together with the valued support of its partners; will be holding it’s free annual keep well, keep warm, keep safe this winter event. The event will take place on Friday 7th November 2008 in the new Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre. A free buffet lunch will be provided.

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the issues that older people face over the winter months, but; more importantly, it aims to help older people (those aged 50+) maintain good health during the winter by making a wide range of information and advice available to them on practical support, financial help and benefits which can be accessed in their communities. For those attending, there will also be an opportunity to participate in a range of interactive activities during the afternoon workshops.

Workshops:
Healthy Homes and Affordable Warmth - One of the main threats to the health and wellbeing of older people over the winter is the lack of income. With fuel poverty on the increase there is a need to work with older people to ensure that they can adequately heat their homes during the cold periods. A workshop combining healthy homes and affordable warmth will be run during the afternoon by South East Wales Energy.
Physical Activity - The moving more often programme is a new project being developed in Merthyr Tydfil to promote health and well-being. The programme includes gentle exercises and WiiHabilitation.
Nutrition – cooking over the winter months and a nutrition quiz.
Accident prevention.
Alternative therapies and its benefits.
